JAKARTA - Tetsuya Yamagami, a suspected shooter to death former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last year, has been on charges on Friday.

Prosecutor's Office Nara said in a statement it charged Yamagami with murder and violation of firearms law after Abe's shooting during a campaign speech in the city on July 8, 2022.

The Nara District Court confirmed they had received the indictment.

Previously, Yamagami had undergone a psychiatric or psychiatric evaluation in Nara since her arrest last year, to determine whether she was mentally healthy for trial, the NHK public broadcaster reported, adding that her detention period evaluation ended on Tuesday.

Separately, doctors said the bullet that killed the late Abe was "deep enough to reach his heart" so the Japanese longest-serving prime minister said he had died of a severe bleeding.

His killings in broad daylight shocked the world and sent shock waves throughout Japan. World leaders offered their condolences, while thousands of mourners gathered on the streets of Tokyo to pay their respects. The state funeral to Abe in September.

Yamagami reportedly held a grudge against the Unification Church for impoverishing his family, saying the Church persuaded his mother to donate about 100 million yen, and blamed Abe for promoting the religious organization.

The Unification Church was founded in South Korea in 1954 and is known for its mass marriages, relying on its Japanese followers as a major source of funding.

The killing highlights evidence to reveal deep and long-standing relations between the church and members of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) parliament.

The LDP has denied any organization's ties to the church, but admits many lawmakers have ties to the religious group.

In November, Japan launched an investigation into a church that could threaten its legal status after Abe's murder.
