JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday he had held a meeting with US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns the day before, who was in the region to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Burns visited Kyiv when Russia attacked the city with missiles. President Zelensky said the CIA chief had spent time in bomb shelters before the two men met.

"We had a meeting with him. (We) are talking about all the issues that are important to Ukraine," President Zelensky told a televised news conference.

President Zelensky also said the two of them also discussed the so-called Russian nuclear threat.

In Washington, a US official said Burns had traveled to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian intelligence partners and President Zelensky, following his meeting in Ankara.

On Monday, Burns met with President Vladimir Putin's spy chief Sergei Naryshkin in Turkey for the first known high-level contact between the US-Russia since the February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed to Russian news agencies that the meeting of the head of US-Russian intelligence took place in the Turkish capital, Ankara, but declined to provide details on the participants or topics discussed.

Separately, Polish President Andrzej Duda met Burns in Warsaw on Wednesday, the head of Poland's National Security Bureau said.
