JAKARTA - US President Joe Biden hopes to limit the deteriorating relationship with China, when he meets Xi Jinping next week, but will be honest about US concerns, including about Taiwan and human rights, a senior government official said Thursday.

"The president believes it is essential to build a foundation for relations and ensure that there are road rules that bind to our competition," the official told reporters.

The White House said President Biden would hold talks on Monday with Xi Leaders on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia, going to be the first face-to-face since President Biden took office in January 2021.

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping last met face-to-face during the Obama Administration, with US relations with China since dropping to their lowest level in decades, especially since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in August.

Senior administration officials said there would be no joint statement from the meeting, where there was no 'expect' for a special deal.

"I hope the president will be honest about some of our concerns, including the activities of the PRC (Chinese People's Republic) that threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as our longstanding concerns about human rights abuses," the official said.

Wars of Russia in Ukraine and North Korea are likely to be discussed, the official said.

However, President Biden said on Wednesday he would not make any fundamental concessions when meeting President Xi, wanting the two leaders to set their "red lines" and resolve areas of conflict, including in Taiwan.

Separately, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters later the government would notify Taiwan of the outcome of Biden's meeting with Xi, aiming to make Taipei feel "safe and comfortable" about US support.

In addition, Sullivan said Washington remains concerned about the possibility of North Korea continuing its nuclear bomb test for the first time since 2017.
