JAKARTA - The head of the UN nuclear watchdog on Wednesday said Iran did not offer anything new during a recent meeting in Vienna, Austria on its nuclear program, but talks will resume in the coming weeks.
Tehran on November 2 announced sending a delegation to Vienna, Austria to try to narrow the discrepancy with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is trying to monitor Iran's nuclear activity.
"So they're not bringing anything new," IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi told Reuters on the sidelines of a COP27 climate conference in Egypt.
"We will meet again at a technical level in Iran in a few weeks."
Iran is seeking to close the IAEA investigation into its nuclear activities, which are part of reviving Tehran's 2015 Nuclear Deal with global powers.
The pact has withheld Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from US economic sanctions, the EU and UN. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018, claiming Iran violated.
Meanwhile, indirect talks between Tehran and US President Joe Biden's Administration about reviving the deal stalled.
"It's no secret that we haven't been able to register some real elements," Grossi said.
"We had the opportunity to get back involved to continue our work, but this will come after the release of my report," he added, referring to a report by the upcoming IAEA quarterly on Iran to be released next week.
