JAKARTA - A court of appeal on Friday sentenced a 36-year-old man to 40 years in prison for stalking and brutally killing his ex-girlfriend last year after the couple broke up.

The verdict for the latest sentence, heavier than the lower 35-year court sentence.

Kim Byung-chan was convicted of stabbing his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend several times in his studio apartment in downtown Seoul, South Korea in November last year.

Previously, he had been stalking his ex-girlfriend since their separation in the second half of 2020.

At the time of his death, he was under police protection after filing four complaints against Kim. The detention order applies to him.

The case has drawn public anger over the disclosure, the victim asked for police help twice through smart watches released by the police on the day he died, but officers arrived at the scene late, because the device was not working.

The Seoul High Court on Friday confirmed lower court confidence in Kim for revenge killings and other charges, raising a five-year prison sentence on the grounds Kim did not really regret it.

"It is feared whether Kim repents seriously, considering she continues to repeat claims that she did not take revenge," the court said, rejecting her defense that the murder was unintentional.

"It seems Kim killed the victim to take revenge out of anger over filing a detention order and others," the court said.

It is known, the prosecutor demanded a life sentence for Kim, both in district courts and in appeal courts.

In addition to adding to the sentence, the appeals court also upheld a lower court order, for Kim to wear a 15-year tracking device.
