WAMENA - The Jayawijaya Regency Government, Papua Province hopes that the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) will place a social granary in the district because the area is prone to disasters.

The Head of the Jayawijaya Social Service, Nikolas Itlay, admitted that he had read in the mass media that the Ministry of Social Affairs plans to build social granaries in 10 districts in Papua.

"We in Jayawijaya are very prone to disasters because some settlements are located on the outskirts of the Baliem River so that when there is a flood, people will definitely be affected. So far, there has been no provision of social granaries, so it is difficult for us to help residents", he said, quoted by Antara, Sunday, September 11.

The former district head in Jayawijaya said that if it was built in Jayawijaya, the social granary would be very helpful.

"In a year there must be a disaster and it's not just a flood because there are fires, landslides, so it needs to be anticipated", said Nikolas Itlay

Previously, the Head of the Social, Population, and Civil Registration Service of Papua Province, Ribka Haluk, welcomed the Ministry of Social Affairs' plan to build social granaries in 10 regencies throughout Papua.

He suggested that social granaries be built in several districts prone to social conflicts such as Intan Jaya, Nduga, Lanny Jaya, Paniai, Puncak Jaya, and Jayawijaya Regencies.

"We hope that this can be done so that it helps areas that are often affected by natural disasters", said Ribka Haluk.
