South Korea And US Held The Largest Field Training, Near North Korean Border

JAKARTA - The distance from this location is less than 32 km from the North Korean border. When the joint forces of South Korea and the US held a massive shooting-shooting exercise, Wednesday, August 31.

These two countries did continue their biggest field exercises in years after diplomatic efforts and COVID-19 restrictions caused many exercises to be reduced.

The Allies see the drills as an important part of their efforts to prevent North Korea and its nuclear arsenal from developing. But for North Korea, the drills are considered war preparation.

It was the first division-level drill for the 2nd/Division Division of the ROK-US Joint Division, the only US military multinational division formed in 2015. ROK is the initials of South Korea's official name.

The drills included live fire from howitzers from America and South Korea, tanks, machine guns, and mortars. The A-10 attack aircraft and the Apache helicopter also participated.

The bullet from howitzer hit the mountain slope of Rodriguez Life Fire Complex, as the main fighter tank of both sides maneuvered and fired their weapons at the target, sending vibrations throughout the valley.

Colonel Brandon Anderson, deputy division commander said the drills were designed to simulate fighting with a 'close' enemy that could match allies in capabilities, he said.

"We are training for large-scale combat operations," Anderson said.

A former senior defense official told Reuters that in many cases US and South Korean troops continued to train but did not publish it.
