JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has confirmed that it is still trying to bring the owner of PT Duta Palma Group, Surya Darmadi, who is still at large, to trial. This step is different from the Attorney General's Office, which opens the opportunity to carry out hearings in absentia or without attendance.

"(At the KPK, ed) he is suspected of being a bribe giver. So we are not talking about state losses. This is the reason why the KPK will not try Surya Darmadi in absentia. As a bribe, he must be held accountable for his actions.

"For the giver (bribe, ed) is there a replacement money? No. Now this has made the KPK so far not take the in-absentia option because the article on bribery is different from article 2, article 3, which can confiscate assets," said Ali .

The Attorney General's Office said it had prepared a scheme to try Surya Darmadi in his absence or in absentia. He is currently believed to be in Singapore.

The Attorney General's Office previously named Surya Darmadi as the owner of PT Duta Palma Group as a suspect in the alleged corruption in the seizure of 37,095 hectares of land in Riau. He was named along with another suspect, Raja Thamsir Rahman who is a former regent of Indragiri Hulu.

Meanwhile at the KPK, Surya Darmadi has been named a suspect since 2019. This determination was made after investigators developed a case against former Riau Governor Annas Maamun.
