Serang Police Prevent Odong-Odong From Operating On Highways

JAKARTA - Serang Resort Police (Polres) personnel prevent odong-odong vehicles operating on the highway, because they can cause traffic accidents.

"We brought an odong-odong vehicle as well as a driver who did not have a driving license for questioning," said the Head of Turjawali Satlantas Serang Police, Inspector of Police One Dirga Abriawan, in Serang, Banten, quoted from Antara, Sunday 7 August.

The Serang Police Traffic Unit arrested an odong-odong vehicle operating on the highway with a total of 25 passengers. Odong-odong is a modified vehicle from a light vehicle, which is made as a means of entertainment.

This vehicle is not recognized in the private and public transportation system by law, and does not have a security and safety system in travel as stipulated by various applicable regulations.

Not long ago there was a deadly accident when the odong-odong was hit by a train at a train crossing without a door.

Currently, odong-odong vehicle drivers are still stubbornly operating on the highway there even though it has been banned, so the Serang Traffic Police Unit optimizes patrols on Jalan Pontang, Jalan Tirtayasa, and Jalan Tanara.

The community also informed the police that many odong-odong in the area were still operating on the highway. "We carried out patrols and only one odong-odong vehicle was secured while crossing the highway," he said.

He said odong-odong vehicles or tourist trains were only allowed to operate in tourist areas and were prohibited from crossing the highway.

The prohibition of odong-odong from operating on the highway should not be repeated in an accident in Silebu Village, Serang, at a train crossing without a gate, resulting in 10 deaths and 23 minor and serious injuries.

"We don't want to repeat the odong-odong vehicle accidents," he said.

According to him, the odong-odong vehicle which was secured by carrying 25 passengers, finally the officers found public transportation so that the passengers could safely arrive at their destination.

The officer also advised passengers to use public transportation and not to ride odong-odong vehicles on the highway. Officers also found an odong-odong vehicle repair shop that was repairing the vehicle.

"We found three odong-odong vehicles that were repaired at the workshop and gave strict warnings not to be asked to operate on the highway," said Abriawan.
