JAKARTA - Israeli forces on Tuesday demolished the homes of two Palestinians accused of killing an Israeli security guard in an attack outside the West Bank settlement of Ariel in April, authorities said.

Hundreds of protesters threw stones, burning tires and Molotov cocktails at soldiers as they carried out an operation in the West Bank town of Qarawat Bani Hassan, the army wrote in a statement.

The mayor of Qarawat Bani Hassan Ibrahim Assi, condemned the operation and pledged support for the relatives of the two suspected gunmen.

"The demolition of the house is a policy of collective punishment that violates all international law," Assi told Reuters, as quoted July 26.

A military statement said the two men carried out the deadly attack on April 29 outside Ariel, one of the largest Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The two Palestinians are currently being held, he said.

According to United Nations data, Israeli authorities have demolished 420 Palestinian-owned buildings in the West Bank this year as of July 25, compared to 911 for the whole of 2021.

The figures include demolition penalties and demolition ordered due to lack of construction permits.
