JAKARTA - Chinese authorities have issued 500,000 yuan or around Rp1.1 billion as a gift to whistleblowers of illegal immigrants in the world's most populous country.

The amount of prize money issued rose from the previous 200,000 yuan (Rp443 million), said Liu Guoqiang, director of the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department's Exit-Permit Administration Bureau, as quoted by a local news website reported by Antara, Saturday.

Since early 2022 until now Guangdong Police have given 530 gifts to local residents and arrested more than 1,400 people suspected of violating immigration cases.

Therefore, Liu encouraged local people to report cases of illegal arrivals.

Currently the Guangdong Police has conducted joint operations with security authorities in the Hong Kong and Macau special administrative regions.

Previously, several intruders through Guangdong, which is the entrance to the southern region of mainland China, tested positive for COVID-19.

Since then, mainland China's security authorities have carried out at least 30 joint operations with Hong Kong and Macau, all of which share a sea border.

Chinese authorities have previously passed regulations on reporting activities that have the potential to endanger state security.

Regulations issued by the Ministry of State Security (MSS) or China's intelligence agency in June also stipulate the amount of the 100,000 yuan (Rp 221 million) reward to whistleblowers.

MSS provides specifics regarding the situation, methods, standards, and procedures for awarding such gifts in accordance with the National Security Act, Anti-Epionage Act, and other laws and regulations.
