Middle-aged Woman In Tanjung Priok Sells Her 8-month-old Nephew Because Her Mother Is Unable To Pay Debts

JAKARTA - The Tanjung Priok Police have uncovered a case of infant trafficking. The suspect with the initials A (51) is known to have sold an 8-month-old baby for Rp. 30 million. Tanjung Priok Port Police Chief AKBP Putu Kholis Aryana said his party received reports from residents regarding someone offering a baby. Putu explained that during the arrest process, his party disguised themselves as the buyer, last Thursday, June 30. "We managed to uncover the baby trafficking case with suspect A who sold the baby for 30 million rupiah," Putu told reporters at the Tanjung Priok Port Police, Wednesday, July 20. Putu said the suspect took the baby from a woman with the initials S who was unable to pay the debt. The baby was taken in exchange for debt payments. "The perpetrators collected a debt of 11 million from the victim's mother, accompanied by threats, including threats to be reported or expelled from the rented house," he said.

Putu also said that S was forced to give up his baby being taken by the suspect because he was unable to pay the debt. "In the end, the mother gave up, giving the baby to the perpetrator. But the perpetrator took the initiative to sell it (the baby). In this case, the baby is 8 months old, the nephew of the suspect," he said. In this case, the suspect was charged with Article 76F in conjunction with Article 83 of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection with a penalty of 15 years in prison.
