MALUKU - The Maluku Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that the number of poor people in this province in March 2022 reached 290.570 people, and decreased by 4.400 people, when compared to September 2021 which recorded 294.970 people.

"The percentage of poor people in this area in March 2022 was 15.97 percent, lower than September 2021 which reached 16.30 percent," said Head of BPS Maluku Province Asep Riyadi in Ambon, Antara, Monday, July 18.

Asep explained that the number of poor people in rural areas in March 2022 was 245.450 people. This number is down compared to September 2021 which showed 245.940 people.

In terms of percentages, the poverty rate in rural areas in March 2022 was 23.50 percent, and also decreased when compared to September 2021 which was 24.34 percent.

Meanwhile, when compared to the March 2021 period, the number of poor people in rural areas decreased by 26.580 people and the percentage of poor people in rural areas also decreased by 3.46 percentage points.

Meanwhile, the poor population in urban areas in March 2022 was recorded at 45.120 people. This number decreased by 3.900 people compared to the September 2021 period which showed 49.020 people.

When viewed in terms of percentages, the poverty rate in urban areas in March 2022 reached 5.82 percent. This means that there is also a decrease compared to September 2021 which was 6.13 percent.

Asep said that the development of the poverty line is a minimum expenditure value for food and non-food needs that must be met in order not to be categorized as poor.

The poor are people who have an average monthly per capita expenditure below the poverty line.

"The poverty line in March 2022 is IDR 631.326 per capita per month, with the composition of the food poverty line of IDR 468.335 or 74.18 percent, and the non-food poverty line of IDR 162.991 or 25.82 percent," he said.

In March 2022, on average, poor households in Maluku had 6.34 household members. Thus, the average poverty line per poor household is IDR 4.002.607 per poor household per month.
