BMKG explanation about the cause of the 5.2 Magnitude Earthquake in Malang

MALANG - Head of the Karangkates Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) Station, Mamuri, said the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Malang at 03.27 WIB was shallow. This is based on monitoring the location of the epicenter and its depth.

Mamuri then revealed the cause of the earthquake. He said this is the result of subduction activity.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has an oblique-thrust fault mechanism", said Mamuri, as reported by Antara, Saturday, July 9.

The earthquake was reported to have no tsunami potential. The community is asked to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be accounted for.

However, the people of Malang and Lumajang regencies are advised to remain alert for aftershocks.

Previously, it was reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred in the southern region of East Java at 03.27 WIB. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to have occurred 171 kilometers southwest of Lumajang Regency with a depth of 47 kilometers.

The earthquake was reported to have been felt in several areas, including Karangkates and Kepanjen in Malang, Lumajang, and Bliter districts with an intensity scale of II Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI).

MMI scale II, ie earthquake vibrations were felt by several people, as well as light objects that were hung swaying.

Then, aftershocks were reported to have occurred at 05.50 WIB with a magnitude of 5.0. The earthquake occurred at 163 southwest of Lumajang Regency, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

At 09.53 WIB with a magnitude of 5.3 with a depth of 10 kilometers at 167 kilometers southwest of Lumajang Regency. The earthquake was felt in Pasirian, Lumajang, Kepanjen Malang Regency to the Malang City area.

One of the residents of Malang City, Krisna Ade, said that the tremor of the aftershock which occurred at around 09.53 WIB was felt lightly and caused several objects to shake.

"The shaking didn't last long, but some things were shaking. I only felt it (wobble) for a bit", he said.
