DENPASAR - A husband and wife (couple) with the initials HPS and LSN from Banyuwangi, East Java, were desperate to steal a sewer cover. Both confessed to stealing so they could buy medicine for their sick child.

The theft of the sewer cover took place on Gurita I Street, Pedungan Indah Housing, Pedungan Village, South Denpasar District, Bali, Thursday, June 9.

"From the statements of the two husband and wife couples, the theft they carried out was for the purpose of buying medicine for a sick child. Where the stolen iron was sold in a junkyard on Bung Tomo Street, Denpasar, for IDR 126,500", said the Head of Public Relations of Denpasar Police, Iptu Ketut Sukadi, Tuesday, June 14.

"For the money from the crime, the perpetrators used the money to buy medicine for children who were sick with Hufagrip's paracetamol, the rest was used to eat", he added.

This theft was reported by residents who saw the cover of the sewer missing. CCTV footage was also checked.

"And after seeing the incident, the reporter took the CCTV footage and uploaded it to the reporter's Instagram and it went viral", said Sukadi.

The police also followed up on this incident by arresting the couple in Pedungan, South Denpasar, Saturday, June 11.

The couple also admitted to stealing metal sewer covers in 8 different places in Denpasar and Badung.

“The perpetrator took the iron so that it could be sold in junk and quickly get money. The person concerned, committed theft in the housing in the afternoon when it was quiet. They are (allegedly) Article 362 of the Criminal Code with a maximum imprisonment of 5 years", he said.
