Banyuwangi Airport Is In The Ranks Of The 20 Best Architectures In The World

SURABAYA - Banyuwangi Airport, East Java, was included in the top 20 buildings with the best architecture at the 2022 Aga Khan Awards For Architecture (AKAA) event.

AKAA's official website released the names of 20 nominees who succeeded in holding 463 other architectural projects from various parts of the world.

This green airport in Banyuwangi competes with 20 other architectural works from 16 countries.

"This is a matter of pride. Banyuwangi Airport has entered a world-class architectural competition, alongside dozens of other architectural works from various countries," said Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani in a written statement, Tuesday, June 7.

AKAA is the oldest award in the field of architecture that can be held every three years.

The works that are included in the response show not only architectural excellence, but also cultural aspirations, supporting conservation and improving environmental quality.

This award gives appreciation not only to architects, but also to clients, craftsmen and all parties who have played an important role in the realization of the project.

In addition to Banyuwangi Airport which represents Indonesia, as many as 20 architectural works have entered, including Wafra Wind Tower from Kuwait, Tulkarm Courthouse from Palestine, Flying Saucer Rehabilitation from the United Arab Emirates, and Le Jardin d'Afrique from Tunisia.

Furthermore, the AKAA 2022 jury will visit and conduct an assessment to determine the winner who is entitled to a prize of 1 million US dollars as the largest form of award in the field of architecture.

Banyuwangi Airport, located in Blimbingsari Village/Sub-district, was built in collaboration with architect Andra Matin.

Banyuwangi Airport has attracted the attention of the world not only because of its design which adopts the shape of the headband of the Osing Tribe (the indigenous people of Banyuwangi), but also because of its green concept and environmentally friendly green building.

"This airport is the first green airport in Indonesia," said Ipuk.

The concept can be seen from the roof of the airport terminal which is planted with plants, air conservation and a sunroof which becomes a source of natural light during the day. The roof of the building also shows a clear division between the departure and arrival terminals.

To qualify for consideration in the 2022 AKAA award, continued Ipuk Regent, architectural projects must be completed between January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021 and have been used for a minimum of one year.

AKAA was founded by Aga Khan in 1977 to identify and appreciate architectural concepts that successfully accommodate the needs and aspirations of the community.

Since its launch 45 years ago, less than 121 projects have received awards and nearly 10,000 have been successful.
