JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said the President of Timor Leste, Jose Ramos Horta, wanted better cooperation with Indonesia.

This was conveyed by Mahfud through an upload on his Instagram account, @mohmahfudmd, Thursday, May 19. He said he had met and had a dialogue with Jose and the meeting took place with great intimacy.

"I had the honor to meet and have a dialogue with the president-elect of Timor Leste, Jose Ramos Horta, today. Our meeting took place in a warm and intimate atmosphere, and took place before his inauguration as President of Timor Leste which is scheduled for tonight," he wrote. Mahfud was quoted as saying Thursday, May 19.

"President-elect Jose Ramos Horta stated that he wants better relations between Timor Leste and Indonesia," he added.

Mahfud certainly welcomed Jose's expectations. He also congratulated and forwarded the invitation from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"I also conveyed an invitation from President Jokowi to him to visit Indonesia," he said.

In addition to meeting with President Jose Ramos Horta, Mahfud also said that he had had a dialogue with Indonesian citizens living in Dili, Timor Leste.

The former chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK) said there were 6,000 Indonesians living and working there. Their work is also spread across a number of sectors.

From the dialogue, Mahfud said, there were a number of stories and input from Indonesian citizens. Not only that, Mahfud briefly explained about the conditions in the country, including the efforts made by the government in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
