JAKARTA - Director of the Regional Company Dharma Jaya Raditya Endra Budiman said that his party conducted a selection by screening every cow that entered Jakarta from an area that was recorded to have the case.

This is done to prevent the entry of cattle infected with mouth and nail disease (FMD) from outside the area, before being consumed by the public.

"All cows that enter Dharma Jaya, before getting off the truck, we have to be screened, especially cows from indicated areas. If there are no indications from areas, they are not," said Raditya when contacted, Tuesday, May 17.

The cows, said Raditya, will be quarantined before being resold in the market. If a cow that has been screened is indicated to have symptoms of FMD, the DKI Provincial Government will send the cow back to the area of origin.

"If it is indicated that the cow is from an area where it is indicated that the cow should not get out of the truck first. We put it in quarantine and we will test it on the truck. If there is an indication, we will order it out, and we will return it," said Raditya.

Separately, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Food, Maritime, and Agriculture Security Agency (KPKP), Suharini Eliawati, said that her party would tighten traffic for livestock shipments sent from outside the region together with a food task force involving the DKI Transportation Agency and Polda Metro Jaya.

"We are tightening the traffic. Apart from seeing the animal health certificate, where the livestock came from, we will also see the physical clinical symptoms of the animal itself," said Suharini.

In addition, the DKI Provincial Government will also provide education to the community of breeders and managers of livestock animal shelters in Jakarta.

"What we emphasize is bio security. Then the honesty of our own breeders, when was the last time we supplied their livestock, when to take them out, where to go, that's what we can communicate to them," he explained.
