Protesting The Naming Of JIS In English, Gerindra Asks Anies To Change Its Name To The Jakarta International Stadium

JAKARTA - Member of the Gerindra faction of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Syarif, responded to the naming of the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) using English which was highlighted by a former member of the Indonesian Ombudsman, Alvin Lie.

Alvin said that the naming of the international standard stadium, which was just inaugurated some time ago, should have used the Indonesian language.

Syarif views that naming buildings in English is easy for the public to understand. However, Syarif agrees with Alvin that the obligation to use the Indonesian language in naming buildings is a mandate in the law.

"Indeed, the equivalent of the words to bind public memories is a bit difficult in Indonesian, some say that. But there is a law. I checked that there are no exceptions, for example, for certain interests you may use a foreign language. Well, there are no exceptions to that ," said Syarif at the DKI DPRD Building, Tuesday, May 10.

Therefore, Syarif asked the Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan to change the name of JIS to use the Indonesian language in order to carry out the orders of the legislation.

"I encourage Pak Anies to comply with the law because the regional head's obligation is to enforce the law. If Indonesia is fighting, it will become the 'Jakarta international stadium'," said Syarif.

The rules in question are Law Number 24 of 2009 concerning the Flag, Language and Emblem of the State, as well as the National Anthem. Then, the derivative rule is Presidential Decree No. 63 of 2019 concerning the Use of the Indonesian Language.

In Article 33, it is stated that the Indonesian language must be used in the names of buildings or buildings, apartments or settlements, offices, and trade complexes established or owned by Indonesian citizens or Indonesian legal entities.

Separately, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria admitted that his party was open to criticism of the naming of JIS using English. Riza said that the DKI Provincial Government would consider changing the name of JIS.

"We will consider it later, we will see the extent of the rules and conditions. Of course we will consider your input and suggestions," said Riza.

Riza said that the original purpose of naming JIS was to make Jakarta equal with other big cities in the world. "Jakarta is not only a city for Indonesia, but Jakarta is also a city like other cities in the world. So, it has become an international city," he said.
