JAYAPURA - Jayapura City Police Chief Kombes Gustav Urbinas, confirmed that the army and police are ready to disperse the demonstration against Papua's new autonomous region (DOB) which will be held on Tuesday, May 10, tomorrow.

As many as 1,000 joint military and police personnel will be alerted to anticipate demonstrations against the formation of new autonomous regions and special autonomy carried out by groups on behalf of the Papuan People's Petition (PRP).

"We will act decisively and ask the PRP to cancel its intention to demonstrate," said Urbinas, in Jayapura, Papua, as reported by Antara, Monday, May 9.

He emphasized that if any groups emerged, strict action would be taken by forcibly disbanding them according to procedures. The police never close the democratic space to express aspirations, as long as it complies with the requirements stipulated in Law No. 9/1998.

"Regarding the planned demonstration on Tuesday (10/5) in Jayapura, they did not meet the formal requirements according to the rules, even a notification letter or permit was given like a thief, where they came to give a letter without telling what the purpose was and immediately ran away," said Urbinas.

The police chief hopes that the public will be wise and not be provoked by provocations. The public is also expected to carry out activities as usual.

"People don't need to worry, the TNI-Polri will provide a sense of security and comfort," he said.
