JAKARTA - Police officers from Sidoarjo City, East Java, confiscated 404 reconditioned cellphones that were not equipped with boxes and official guarantees from a man from Batam with the initials C.

Sidoarjo Police Chief Kombes Pol Kusumo Wahyu Bintoro said that when marketing the reconditioned cellphones under the Iphone and Sony brands, the suspect used an online shop with a Panda.Shop88 account.

"The disclosure of this case began with a consumer report to the Sidoarjo Police. He felt aggrieved regarding him having purchased a mobile phone through an online store, it turned out that after receiving the goods in a damaged condition. The suspect is domiciled in Sidoarjo and keeps his reconditioned cellphones in a number of places. Sidoarjo," said Kombes Kusumo, quoting Antara, Friday, April 29.

He said related to the report, the Tipidter Unit of the Sidoarjo Police Satreskrim conducted searches at four locations in Sidoarjo suspected of being places of business activity for trading reconditioned cell phones without boxes and without an official guarantee from the manufacturer, and without labels in Indonesian.

From the four locations, he said, a total of 404 reconditioned mobile phones with Iphone and Sony brands were obtained of various types as well as other evidence, such as 70 boxes, three CPUs, one monitor and one sales book.

According to him, the way the perpetrators market their wares through online stores does not serve direct transactions.

"The suspect made two offers. The first is a 'full' set but does not include the IMEI, and the second is a bar cell phone," he said.

For his business actions that trade goods that are not in accordance with the quality, language and labels, suspect C is subject to a maximum imprisonment of five years or a fine of Rp. 2 billion. As regulated in Article 62 Paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 8 Paragraph (1) Letters a and j of the Republic of Indonesia Law no. 08 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection.
