Ahead Of The Global Platform Forum For Disaster Risk Reduction, UN Special Envoy: Indonesia Is The Right Host

JAKARTA - Indonesia will host the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) Forum. This forum will be held in Bali with discussions on efforts to build sustainable disaster resilience with environmental protection.

The Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mami Mizutori said, Indonesia was the right host. According to him, Indonesia has found a way to overcome disaster risk.

"I think Indonesia is the right host. Although it is vulnerable to disasters and has faced various disasters, (Indonesia) has found ways to overcome disaster risks at the national and regional levels," said Mizutori, as reported by Antara, Saturday, April 22.

He explained that political leadership from the top tiers of regional and central government was needed for this effort. "In line with the big theme of the G20 Indonesia and we can turn risk into resilience and improve our economy," he continued.

Mizutori emphasized the importance of efforts to reduce disaster risk along with protecting the environment.

"No country is exempt from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and extreme climatic events. But the important thing is that both types of disasters can be mitigated through disaster reduction," said Mizutori.

During COP26 last year, said Mizutori, it was clear that disaster resilience had an important role. At this year's COP27 in Egypt, there will be further discussion on how adaptation to climate can be integrated with comprehensive risk reduction.

This is especially important for developing countries, archipelagic countries, and small countries, he said.

"This global platform will bridge COP26 and COP27 through discussions related to climate and disaster risk reduction," he said.
