JAKARTA - At least 17 people have died in the eastern Indian state of Bihar after they were suspected of consuming fake liquor.

The CGTN news agency quoted local television news channel News18 as saying the deaths occurred in four districts - Madhepura, Bhagalpur, Banka, and Murliganj, Sunday, March 20.

"As per available information, three people have died in Madhepura, nine in Banka and four in Bhagalpur, while Murliganj Bihar has reported one death due to consumption of fake liquor," the channel said.

"This is the latest in a series of fake liquor deaths in Bihar and comes less than a week after 16 people were killed in two districts - Bhagalpur (six) and Gopalganj (10) - of the state," the report continued.

Bihar is a dry state and there has been a complete ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol since 2016.

Officials say only a post-mortem report can confirm the real reason behind the death. Until now the investigation is still ongoing.

Fake alcohol deaths are frequently reported in India, where people often drink cheap state-made bootleg liquor.
