JAKARTA - The Jakarta Forum for the Environment (Walhi) gave a critical note to DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in commemoration of the National Waste Care Day (HPSN).

Walhi Jakarta Executive Director Tubagus Soleh Ahmadi views, for 14 years after the determination of the HPSN, Jakarta has actually headed for a waste emergency condition. This is evidenced by the waste management project initiated by Anies.

Currently, the DKI Provincial Government is building a hydrodrive incinerator technology management system in the Tebet area, South Jakarta. This machine operates by burning garbage. Unfortunately, Tubagus views the incinerator as a misguided program.

"The use of incinerator technology in waste management is not the right solution. Because this technology further distances the spirit of solving waste problems from the source," said Tubagus in an official statement, Monday, February 21.

With the incinerator waste management, said Tubagus, the public will actually have the view that the disposal of large amounts of waste is not a problem because it will be destroyed later.

"Instead of building public awareness in reducing waste production, the presence of an incinerator will actually create the perception that no matter how much waste will be destroyed," said Tubagus.

Moreover, he continued, around 53 percent of Jakarta's waste is food waste which is classified as organic and seven percent of waste is paper which can also be recycled.

"Thus, more than half of Jakarta's waste is waste that can be processed by the community without having to be burned by an incinerator," he added.
