The Peak Of COVID-19 Cases Due To Omicron Has Exceeded The Peak Of Delta Cases

JAKARTA - Secretary of the Directorate General of Public Health of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) Siti Nadia Tarmizi revealed that the peak of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia due to the spread of the Omicron variant had exceeded the peak of cases of the Delta variant in mid-2021.

Nadia said this was shown in the addition of new cases on February 15 as many as 57,049 cases. Meanwhile, the peak of Delta cases occurred on July 15, 2021 with an increase of 56,757 cases.

"The peak cases of COVID-19 as of February 15 were at 57,049 cases, this figure has exceeded Delta's peak (of) 56,000 cases," Nadia said in a virtual press conference, Wednesday, February 16.

However, Nadia said that the current peak of COVID-19 case fatalities was much lower than the Delta variant wave.

"Looking at the number of deaths yesterday, it was reported that there were 134 deaths, this number is much lower than when Delta had the death rate of around 2,500 people," he said.

Likewise, the percentage of positive cases from the number of specimens examined or the positivity rate currently reaches 16.68 percent. Although far above the WHO standard, this figure is still lower during the surge in the Delta variant.

"If we compare it to the time of the Delta surge, our positivity rate has reached 50 percent," he explained.

For information, as of February 15, positive cases since COVID-19 were found in Indonesia reached 4,901,328 and active cases were 406,025 cases.

Today's recovered cases increased by 26,747 cases, bringing the total to 4,349,848 recovered people. Then, positive confirmed cases who died increased by 134 people and a total of 145,455 people.

To date, 188,590,685 people have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination and 136,647,928 people have received the second dose of vaccination. While the third dose of vaccination was 7,277,382. Meanwhile, the target for vaccination in Indonesia is 208,265,720 people.
