Criticized By Eugenio Derbez For Memorizing Spain, Selena Gomez: Sorry, I Tried Hard

Selena Gomez responded to actor Eugenio Derbez's criticism of his appearance in the film Emilia Perez. In the film, Gomez is required to play a Spanish character who drew a negative response from the Spanish-born actor.

Emilia Perez tells the story of Emilia Perez, a leader of a Mexican drug cartel who carries out gender change operations for transition. Gomez plays her partner, Jessi Del Monte in this film.

This film represents France for Oscars in the International Feature category because it is the result of cooperation from several countries.

Eugonia Derbez, a senior Spanish actor, was asked about this film and she responded with confusion, especially with the pronunciation delivered by Selena Gomez.

'Selena can't be defended. I watch it with my friends and every time there's a scene of him, we see each other and keep asking 'What's this?' said Derbez.

I feel they don't talk Spanish. If you watch a Russian or German film, which expires in Spain and then you see someone speaking the original language, you will say Oh OK! Interesting" he continued.

He also criticized director Jacques Audiard for making films about Spain without understanding the nuances of his language which could have an impact on his acting.

The funny director... I love the film, next to Selena's scene. But I tell myself 'Surprisingly a director who doesn't speak English or Spanish then the film is in Spanish and English with a background in Mexico and you won't understand the culture,' explained Derbez.

"It feels like I made a film in Russia but I don't know Russian culture or speak or speak in France," said the 63-year-old actor.

The video clip became popular on social media until Selena Gomez saw it and responded to the clip.

"I understand where you came from. I'm sorry I tried my best with the time given," wrote Selena Gomez.

"It doesn't reduce how hard work and heart I put in this film," he said.
