Jokowi: China Must Maintain Peace And Stability In Indo-Pacific

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized that all countries, including China, must maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

This statement was made by Jokowi in a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Chengdu, Thursday, July 27.

"The president said that the rivalry between major powers must be managed so as not to cause conflicts that harm the region," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in a copy of her statement regarding the meeting.

Jokowi stated that he welcomed the resumption of communication between China and the United States and appreciated the completion of the guidelines for accelerating behavioral guidelines (CoC) in the South China Sea.

"Regarding ASEAN, the President asked for RRT support for the concrete implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, including the participation of BUMN and the private sector of China in the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum which will be held next September in Jakarta," said Retno.

In addition, Jokowi also asked for Chinese support for the success of the East Asian Summit which will be held in September.

Jokowi then invited China to work together in fighting for the interests of developing countries in the field of sustainable tropical forestry and actions against climate change.

Indonesia also invited China's participation in the World Water Forum-10 in Bali on May 18-24, 2024.

President Jokowi's visit to Chengdu on 27-28 July 2024 was to fulfill President Xi Jinping's invitation, and to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Indonesia-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

After meeting President Xi Jinping on the first day of his visit, Jokowi is scheduled to attend meetings with Chinese businessmen and investors and attend the opening of Universide, a world student sports party on Friday (28/7).
