BMKG Warns Of Potential Bad Weather In Various Regions Of Indonesia Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for moderate-heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in parts of Indonesia on Sunday.

In the weather early warning system, BMKG predicts provinces that have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain and can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds have the potential to occur in Aceh, Bangka Belitung, Banten, Bengkulu.

Then, parts of DKI Jakarta, Jambi, West Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Lampung, Maluku, North Maluku.

Then, Papua, West Papua, Riau, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, and North Sumatra.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto explained that several factors in atmospheric dynamics that caused rain were still falling at the beginning of the dry season, including the active Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) as well as the equitable waves Kelvin and Rossby.

The three atmospheric dynamics can increase the potential for rain cloud growth and indirectly increase rainfall.

"For this reason, BMKG appeals to affected communities, especially those entering danger areas, to increase vigilance and prepare mitigation efforts against the potential for heavy to very heavy rain in the vicinity," he said as quoted by Antara.

On the other hand, BMKG also appealed to coastal communities to be aware of the potential for high waves of up to six meters in several Indonesian waters on 8-9 July 2023.

"We ask people who live and work on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur to remain vigilant," said Head of the Maritime Meteorology Center, BMKG, Eko Prasetyo.

He said the wind pattern in northern Indonesia generally moves from the southeast-southwest with wind speeds ranging from 4-20 knots, while in southern Indonesia it generally moves from east-southeast at a speed of 8-25 knots.

"The highest wind speed was observed in the southern Sunda Strait, Banda Sea, Kep. Sermata-Kep. Tanimbar, and Arafuru Sea," said Eko.
