BMKG Urges NTT Residents To Beware Of 3.5 Meters High Waves In South Waters Of Sumba And Sabu Islands

For the next few days, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed and reminded residents to be aware of waves as high as 3.5 meters that could hit the southern sea area of Sumba Island and Sabu Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"The potential for waves with heights ranging from 2.5-3.5 meters or high categories needs to be watched out for because there is a high risk of shipping ferries and fishing boats," said Acting Head of the Tenau Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station BMKG Agung Sudiono Abadi in Kupang, Tuesday.

He said this was related to the early warning of high waves in the waters of the NTT sea which was valid during April 26-28.

Agung appealed to ship operators and fishermen to increase their vigilance when they want to cross the southern waters of Sumba and Sabu for the next few days, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, March 25.

In addition to the two territorial waters, he said, several marine areas in NTT have the potential to be hit by moderate waves (1.25-2.5 meters) in the Sumba Strait, Sawu Sea, southern waters of Kupang-Rote, and the southern Indian Ocean of Kupang-Rote.

The potential for moderate waves, he said, should also be watched out for because of the high risk of shipping fishing boats and barges.

In addition to high waves, Agung continued, the results of the analysis of the condition of the pharmacy show that generally the wind blows from northeast to southeast at a speed of 2-6 on the Beaufort Scale.

He reminded ship operators and fishermen in NTT to continue to monitor information on maritime weather developments from BMKG as a reference to support safe and smooth shipping activities.
