Hiroshima Modern Art Museum Reopens After Two Years Of Closed

JAKARTA - The modern art museum designed by the world's famous architect, Kino Kikawa, in Hiroshima City has reopened after two years of closure for renovation.

The Hiroshima City Contemporary Art Museum opened in 1989, as the first modern art museum to be managed by the public in Japan.

The museum has showcased many works of art with the theme of atomic bombs and peace, because of its location in the city that was once hit by an atomic bomb in the last days of World War II in 1945.

After massive renovations and repairs to the interior and exterior of the building, the building, which reopened in the middle of this month, is now equipped with a express-free bathroom and breastfeeding room for museums to be more accessible.

Among other changes to the facility that closed in December 2020 due to age, the aluminum roof has been replaced, and the exhibition room is now illuminated with LED lights.

A cafe has also been added at the entrance, along with a multipurpose room.

"Today is a new beginning. We want to continue to play our role in sending peace messages," said Junji Teraguchi, museum director, as he celebrated the reopening of the museum.

Marking the reopening, this museum features about 100 artists from within and outside the country, exploring the theme of changes in a special exhibition entitled "Before/Alter" which will last until June.

It is known that the late architectungkawa is also known for his works, including the now-destroyed Nakagin Capsule Tower, an iconic building in the Ginza area, Tokyo, which is meant to symbolize the concept of "metabolism" he carries.
