The History Of The Sudirman Cup, From Indonesia To The World

YOGYAKARTA Sudirman Cup is a world-class badminton championship with a mixed team system which is held every two years. This prestigious championship originated from the Indonesian badminton shop named Sudirman. Sudirman's role is part of the history of the Sudirman Cup.

The history of the Sudirman Cup began with Indonesian badminton figure, Dick Sudirman. The badminton athlete was born on April 19, 1922 in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra. While working in the badminton world, he was instrumental in establishing the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI). Not only did Sudirman succeeded in leading PBSI with a term of office of up to 22 years, namely 1952 - 1963 and 1967 - 1981.

Not only in the country, Sudirman also has a big role in the unification of two world badminton organizations, namely the International Badminton Federation (IBF) and the World Badminton Federation (WBF). In 1978, there were two world badminton organizations. This condition certainly is not profitable for the development of world badminton.

To reunite the two organizations, Sudirman then initiated a meeting of the two organizations. The meeting of representatives of the two organizations was held in 1979 in Bandung. As a result, IBF and WBF reconciliation was successfully carried out. On May 28, 1981, the two organizations merged into one until they became known as the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which is now a world badminton federation.

Dick Sudirman's role, which is so great for the world badminton federation, is considered worthy of memory, especially after Sudirman died in 1986. Sudirman Cup's first origin was Suharso Suhandinata, a close friend of Sudirman who also served as Deputy Chair of PBSI.

In August 1986, Suharso Suhandinata wrote with IBF President Arthur Jones. In his letter he asked permission to hold a competition as a sign of respect for Sudirman for his services in the past. The tournament is also a real step in memory of Sudirman.

The idea was not immediately approved. In 1986 the IBF Council held a meeting to discuss the Sudirman Cup proposal. Sudirman's competition was only held for the first time on May 24-29 1989 in Indonesia. At that time there were 28 teams participating. Since then this title has been popular in the world of international badminton. Even the Sudirman Cup is now on par with other international badminton championships.

Sudirman Cup was first held at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta. Apart from Indonesia, several countries that participated in this competition were South Korea, England, Malaysia, China, and Denmark. On that occasion, the trophy was obtained by Indonesia after successfully defeating South Korea with a score of 3-2.

Unfortunately, Indonesia won the Sudirman Cup for the first time, and that happened in 1989 which coincided with when Indonesia hosted. China has become the most successful country in the Sudirman championship with 11 trophies, then South Korea has 4 trophies.
