Discussing Presidential Regulation Plans On The Future Of National Media Industry, Jokowi: 60 Percent Of Advertising Spending Taken By Foreign Platforms, So Sad

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo held a meeting with members of the press last night. There has been discussion about plans to issue a Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on the sustainability of the conventional and digital media industry and related regulations on journalistic copyright or publisher rights initiated by Kominfo.

Jokowi conveyed this in his speech at the 2023 National Press Day (HPN) Commemoration Peak in Medan, North Sumatra, Thursday 9 February. At first, Jokowi felt sad about the future of the conventional press media industry

"The sustainability of the conventional media industry is also facing serious challenges. I have heard a lot about this, that around 60 percent of advertising spending has been taken up by digital media, especially foreign platforms. This saddens us," said Jokowi.

That's why Jokowi asked for problems concerning the future of conventional and digital press media in the country to be addressed immediately. The government encourages digital platforms to partner with press media with a business-to-business direction.

"So last night, while eating durian I invited several figures from the press to talk about this [sustainability of the press industry], we know that the Minister of Communication and Informatics [Menkominfo Johnny G Plate] has just submitted an initiative permit regarding the draft Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on work together with digital platform companies and press companies to support quality journalism," said Jokowi.

The proposed presidential regulation initiated by Kominfo also concerns the control of journalistic work, which is primarily the responsibility of the press media and then the Press Council.

Jokowi also suggested that the Minister of Communication and Informatics meet with members of the press to discuss more in-depth substance to accelerate the formation of a Presidential Decree on the sustainability of the conventional and digital media industry as well as related to the control of this journalistic work.

"My advice [menkominfo] meet [press representatives], then within one month this Perpres should be completed, not more than one month. I will participate later in several discussions regarding this," said Jokowi.
