Waiting For Shin Tae-yong's Day, Fired Or Instead Selamat?
JAKARTA - Shin Tae-yong's future as the coach of the Indonesian national team is a question mark. The failure of the Garuda Squad in the 2022 AFF Cup made Shin pressure to withdraw.
The demand for resignation came from a number of parties, including members of the PSSI Executive Committee.
After the PSSI Ordinary Congress was held on Sunday, January 16, PSSI Technical Director Indra Sjafri met with Shin on the same day.
Based on the evaluation results in his department, Indra said, Shin Tae-yong deserved to continue his work of coaching the national team at least until his contract expires in December 2023.
However, he admitted that he could not make a decision. Indra said, everything depends on the decision of Exco PSSI.
"I personally think that Shin is still very worthy (trained the Indonesian-ed national team) because, in terms of games, the team's quality is better. However, this evaluation report will still be reported to the General Chairperson (Mochamad Iriawan) who will then discuss with Exco. How will the decision be, it depends on Exco," said Indra as quoted by Antara, Monday (16/1/2023).
According to Indra, Shin explained technically why Indonesia was unable to become a champion in the 2022 AFF Cup. He said Shin also complained that the quality of the national team players was still not good.
The former Bali United coach later revealed that PSSI did not target the AFF Cup champion to Shin when the South Korean man was appointed coach of the Indonesian national team in December 2019. In fact, the desire to win the AFF Cup came from the coach.
"That is not PSSI's promise, but Coach Shin's promise. Now that promise is not realized, it is appropriate for PSSI to ask why it did not materialize. This is Shin's promised target, so we need to evaluate it," said Indra.
