Indef Calls The Fisheries Sector Can Accelerate The Economy Of Nias Island

JAKARTA - Deputy Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) Eko Listiyanto revealed that the development and development of the fisheries sector has the prospect of accelerating the economy of Nias Island.

"What has not and needs to be worked on in Nias is the fisheries sector. Nias Island itself is known as a center for the fisheries and marine sectors," said Eko as quoted by Antara, Monday, January 9.

The purpose of the Minister of SOEs, he continued, was to raise the economic development of Nias Island.

"One of the stimulations can be from fish production which is considered to have the prospect of accelerating Nias' economy," he said.

In addition to fisheries, he said, Nias is also considered to have the potential as an attractive tourism destination which of course needs to be supported by superior human resources.

"Nias generally has good natural potential as a tourist destination. In order to become a tourist destination, Nias needs superior human resources. Several places in Nias are ready to become tourism destinations based on natural panorama, tourist villages and so on. In order to become a tourist destination, Nias needs superior human resources," said Eko.

Previously, SOE Minister Erick Thohir wanted to develop the economy of Nias Island so that the island's economic condition could be lifted immediately and had spoken with regional leaders for long-term development.

It was stated that there were a number of alternatives, including making Nias a tourist center such as Labuan Bajo and Mandalika, or becoming an integrated marine area.

The economic condition of Nias Island, which is the suppression of the Minister of SOEs, considering that the four districts on the westernmost island in Indonesia are classified as lagging behind, including when compared to other regencies and cities in North Sumatra.
