BMKG Forecasts Aceh, Bali To South Sumatra Rain Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked Acehnese, Bali, South Sumatra (Sumsel) and a number of other parts of Indonesia to be aware of the potential for heavy rain accompanied by strong winds today, Wednesday, January 4.

In the weather early warning system, BMKG explained that other provinces that have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds occurred in Bangka Belitung, Banten, and Bengkulu.

Then, Gorontalo, Jambi, West Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Lampung, North Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara. Then, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, West Papua, Riau, South Sulawesi, and Central Sulawesi.

BMKG also asked coastal communities to be aware of the potential for high waves of up to six meters in several Indonesian waters.

"We ask people who live and work on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur to remain vigilant," said Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center, Eko Prasetyo, as quoted by Antara.

He said the high waves had the potential to occur on January 3-5, 2023, along with the wind pattern in Indonesian territory.

Eko explained that the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia is dominantly moving from the northwest-northeast with wind speeds ranging from 6-20 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia it is dominantly moving from the Southwest-Northwest with wind speeds ranging from 8-35 knots.

The highest wind speed was observed in the eastern Java Sea, South Indian Ocean, Central Java, South Indian Ocean Kupang, Savu Sea, Kupang-P. Rote waters, P. Sabu waters, Timor Sea, western Arafuru Sea, and Savu Sea.

Waves 4-6 meters are likely to occur in the South Indian Ocean, East Java-NTT, Timor Sea, waters P. Sabu, western Sumba Strait, southern waters of Kupang-P. Rotte, southern part of the Sawu Sea, southern waters of Lombok-Sumbawa, western waters of P. Sumba, to the North Natuna Sea.
