670 Prisoners' Phones In Detention Centers And Prisons In Jakarta Were Destroyed By Officers

A total of 670 cellphones and other electronic items confiscated were destroyed by correctional officers at the Salemba Detention Center (Rutan) Class 1A, Central Jakarta, Friday, December 23.

"All of these items belong to inmates from all detention centers (Rutan) and correctional institutions (Lapas) throughout DKI," said Head of the Regional Office (Kakanwil) of the DKI Jakarta Ministry of Law and Human Rights Ibnu Chuldun to reporters at the location, Friday, December 23.

Ibnu Chuldun said that for inmates who were found to have a cellphone, they would definitely get sanctions. Starting from a warning to not getting remission for inmates who are caught having a cellphone.

"The heaviest sanction is that it cannot be remissiond and is in solitary confinement," he said.

Ibnu said the number of 670 cellphones that were successfully secured was considered small when compared to the number of inmates which reached 17 thousand. The number of goods destroyed is also said to have decreased.

"In my opinion, the number is relatively small this year compared to the previous year. Inmates usually use cellphones for the purpose of communicating with their families," he said.

Previously, it was reported that hundreds of Jakarta correctional officers held a standby rally for the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year celebrations (Nataru) simultaneously throughout Indonesia at the Salemba Class 1 Detention Center, Central Jakarta.

"(Apel) Representatives of personnel from all prisons, detention centers and immigration are around 350 people who attend the apple. This is our preparedness ahead of Nataru," said Head of the Regional Office (Kakanwil) of the DKI Jakarta Ministry of Law and Human Rights Ibnu Chuldun to reporters at the location, Friday, December 23.
