Gemini Bocor Crypto Exchange Data, 5.7 Million Affected Customer Accounts!
JAKARTA Crypto trading company Gemini has leaked its user data. A total of 5.7 million user account data containing email addresses and phone numbers were reportedly leaked due to phishing crimes. The term Phishing refers to an attempt to trick someone into obtaining sensitive data to access user accounts.
According to a Cointelegraph report, December 14, 2022, about "5,701,649 lines of information relating to Gemini subscribers" have been leaked by data breaches. Reporter Zhiyuan Sun wrote that the publication reviewed documents that had shown the leak featured Gemini's customer email address and some phone numbers.
On the same day, Gemini published a blog post about protecting customers from phishing incidents and said third parties were responsible for the breach.
"Several Gemini customers have recently been targeted by a phishing campaign that we believe is the result of an incident in a third-party vendor," wrote Gemini's blog post. "This incident led to Gemini's collection of email addresses and some phone numbers."
Even so, the US crypto exchange announced that user funds are still safe on the Gemini platform. At the same time, Gemini emphasized that user funds are a top priority that the company must secure. Furthermore, the company advises users to change user's email data and authentication.
"No information or Gemini account systems have been affected as a result of this third-party incident, and all customer funds and accounts remain safe," Gemini announced.
Another crypto company that has experienced data leakage due to phishing was also experienced by Ledger, a physical crypto wallet developer or hard wallet, in 2020. Then, a crypto trading company from India, Buyucoin, also experienced the same thing which had an impact on 325,000 leaked user data.
It didn't stop there, the crypto company that went bankrupt, Celsius also had the same incident. In fact, the leading NFT trading platform, OpenSea, also experienced data leakage due to the digital crime.
