Digital Rupiah Plans, Banks Will Have Two Accounts: Ordinary Money Accounts And Digital Money Accounts

JAKARTA Bank Indonesia (BI) continues to finalize the concept of applying digital rupiah as part of legal financial transactions.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said his party had designed a special scheme with a wholesaler and retailer concept. He explained that Bank Indonesia has built a large system containing digital rupiah coding and is confidential.

This is what we will then connect with players in financial services, be it banking institutions or non-bank financial services institutions. They are what we call wholesalers or distributors. Currently we are still choosing who they will become wholesalers," he said in a talkshow on the BIRama Series (BI Bersama Masyarakat): MINUTE the Road Towards Digital Rupiah, Monday, December 5.

Perry menambahkan, nantinya para bank terpilih itu akan terhubung ke dalam blockchain BI yang memungkinkan terjadinya transaksi dari deposit uang biasa menjadi uang rupiah digital.

Later they (selected banks) can also transact between banks because each one is connected to an integrated distributed higher technic or blockchain. So if you want to move an account or account deposit to BI, you don't need to fill in the application and then BI sends a settlement, that's not. So everything is direct and instantaneous," he said.

Then, Bank Indonesia will also appoint this wholesaler to be a retailer to the public in accordance with the technological capabilities of each bank.

"Well, these banks or non-bank financial services institutions can then open two accounts, namely regular accounts (conventional money) with digital accounts. We all call these two tiers, namely wholesalers of digital rupiah and retailers of digital rupiah," explained Perry.

"But if the technology of banks is deemed unable to become retailers, then BI itself will be the retailer. This is like the concept of Bank Indonesia distributing money directly to the 3T area, namely lead, remote and lagging behind," he continued.

For information, BI itself is still making selections for a number of large banks in Indonesia to be appointed as wholesalers and retailers of digital rupiah.

Meanwhile, one of the major national banks that has the strongest digital transaction banking background in Indonesia is BCA. Some time ago VOI had asked BCA President Director Jahja Setiaatmadja regarding the company's opportunity to become a digital rupiah dealer/presert.

According to him, BCA is ready to be an important part of the history of national finance by taking part in the first launch. This was revealed as well as BCA's contribution to the country's economic development.

"Hopefully we can enter to become wholesalers of digital rupiah from Bank Indonesia. Of course we will try to meet the criteria and which may be announced soon", said Jahja. He also ensured that the company would optimize all channels owned to make the strategic agenda of Bank Indonesia and the government successful.

"In the future, we will definitely encourage socialization and help with further development," explained the bank official, which is owned by the Hartono Brothers conglomerate.
