Foreign Ministry Says Russia Is Ready to Mediate Saudi Arabia with Iran

JAKARTA - Russia is in contact with Saudi Arabia and Iran, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Tuesday, ready to play the role of mediator if Riyadh and Tehran need this.

"Of course, we keep in touch with our Saudi friends and Iranian friends," Bogdanov said, launching TASS November 8.

Bogdanov said this answered the question of whether Moscow was in contact with Riyadh and Tehran amid reports Iran may be suspected of planning to attack Saudi Arabia.

"And, of course, we are to resolve all misunderstandings and contradictions within the framework of a constructive dialogue at the negotiating table. We are always ready and really put forth efforts to play a certain mediating role, if this is requested by our friends in Riyadh and Tehran," he added.

Earlier, Reuters, citing a National Security Council (NSC) official, reported the United States is concerned about threats to Saudi Arabia from Iran, stands ready to respond if necessary, and maintains constant contact with Riyadh through military and intelligence channels.

The NSC spokesman made this statement after The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia had shared intelligence with the United States testifying about Iran's plans to attack Saudi targets.

Separately, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani vehemently denied rumors of preparations for an attack on Saudi Arabia.
