Aw has debts in July 2021 because of loans he takes from moneylenders without a permit and also from gambling.
After planning to earn money by promising fake Rolex watches at pawnshops to earn money, Aw is looking for a supplier for a watch that has a very close resemblance to the original.
He found a suitable supplier and bought two fake Rolex watches for S$800 and S$850. On July 15, 2021, Aw went to a pawnshop on Marsiling to pawn one of them.
The employee asked for a certificate of the authenticity of the Rolex Submariner, but Aw claimed it was missing. He managed to deceive employees and got a S$18,000 in return.
Aw also pawned fake Rolex Deep Sea Dweller for S$16,500 at the same store that day.
In total he managed to get S$34,500 for two fake Rolexes, Aw got bolder and decided to scam the shop again. However, he thought it might look suspicious if he brought his third watch there.
Finally he asked a friend to do it. His friend brought another fake Rolex Submariner to the same shop on July 16, 2021, where he was promised a S$18,000.
Aw then used cash to buy gold. However, the pawnshop learned about the fraud and the police report was filed a few days later. The gold items along with S$4,300 cash were confiscated from Aw when he was arrested.
Pegadaian is willing to receive gold and cash, all of which are valued around S$31,700, as compensation.
