KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents to be aware of the potential for waves as high as 3 meters which are likely to occur in two marine areas in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)."Sea waves as high as 2.5-3.0 meters have the potential to occur in the western Sumba Strait and the southern Indian Ocean of Sumba-Sabu, need to be watched out for because of the high risk of shipping," said Head of the BMKG Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station, Syaeful Hadi in a statement received in Kupang, Antara, Thursday, September 8.This was conveyed by Syaeful Hadi regarding the early warning of high waves in the waters of the NTT sea which was valid for September 8-9, 2022.Syaeful explained that high-profile sea waves are at risk of ferry shipping so it is necessary to be aware of the ship's operators. In addition, he said, several other water points have the potential to be hit by moderate waves (1.25-2.5 meters) namely the Sawu Sea, Kupang-Rote waters, and the southern Indian Ocean Kupang-Rote.The potential for moderate waves, he said, also needs to be watched out for because it has a high risk of shipping fishing boats and barges.Meanwhile, the results of the analysis of synoptic conditions show that generally the wind direction in the southern part of Indonesia moves from East to Southeast with wind speeds ranging from 5-20 knots.Syaeful appealed to fishermen and ship operators in NTT to continue to observe maritime weather conditions to avoid the threat of bad weather that endangers shipping safety."Please continue to update the development of information provided by BMKG as a reference to determine safe and smooth shipping activities," he said.
