BNN Encourages Family's Role In The Recovery Process For Drug Addicts: They Need To Be Helped To Recover, Not To Be Considered Garbage

YOGYAKARTA - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta said drug addicts need family support to recover.

The Coordinator for the Rehabilitation of BNN DIY, Windy Elfasari, said that families have an important role. According to him, they need support from the surrounding community, especially families.

He assessed that not a few people only associate the existence of drug addicts with legal sanctions, without thinking about how they are free from drug entanglements.

"They need to be helped to recover, not to be ostracized or considered trash," said Windy as quoted from Antara, Sunday, July 24.

One of the important roles of the family according to Windy is helping drug addicts to access rehabilitation facilities, including in Yogyakarta. "Indeed, they are usually encouraged by their families to seek rehabilitation," said Windy.

He then said, BNNP DIY continues to intensify education to the community or families through the formation of a community-based intervention team (IBM) at the village level.

Through the intervention team, he hopes that the community will be able to position drug users like sick people and get help immediately.

Although it doesn't cover all villages, according to Windy, IBM's presence is enough to help the rehabilitation program promoted by BNNP DIY.

During the first quarter of 2022, he recorded 664 narcotics and illegal drug users in Yogyakarta accessing rehabilitation services.

Of the hundreds of drug users, according to him, as many as 557 drug users accessed rehabilitation services belonging to BNN partners with the highest number in Yogyakarta City, and 87 others at BNN clinics in Yogyakarta.

Besides being free, he said, Law (UU) No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics has guaranteed that narcotics users undergoing rehabilitation are guaranteed to be free from legal entanglements.

"If he reports himself for the rehabilitation process, we will rehabilitate him, not for arrest data. We also guarantee his confidentiality," said Windy Elfasari.
