For A Decade, Pertamina Contributes 27 Percent Emission Reduction
JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) recorded a contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 27.08 percent for a decade in the 2010 to 2020 period through a carbon emission reduction program with energy efficiency.
Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said the achievement of emission reductions was higher than the national target of 26 percent in 2020.
"Last year we reduced carbon emissions by 27 percent, higher than the national target of 26 percent. So we will continue to increase it so that the 2030 target for reducing carbon emissions is 30 percent, and also Net Zero Emissions in 2060. We are optimistic that we can make a big contribution to the country. ," Nicke said as quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 9.
Nicke explained that the emission reduction was carried out by Pertamina through an energy efficiency program.
For example, Pertamina converts exhaust gas in the production process at an oil refinery into energy again.
Pertamina also recorded an increase in the ranking of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) scores at the global level. Based on Sustainalytics' calculations, Pertamina's ESG score was 28.1 as of September 2021. This score increased from the previous Pertamina's ESG score of 41.6.
With the increase in the ESG rating, Pertamina has become an energy company with the number five ESG rating in the world, surpassing Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Petronas.
This has been achieved by Pertamina through various programs such as energy efficiency, conversion of BBM to BBG, implementation of bio-energy, to the shift to the use of fuel that is more environmentally friendly.
Nicke said that Pertamina is currently in a major program of transitioning the use of fossil energy into new and renewable energy.
"We know that the golden age of oil and gas will end sooner or later, so we have to switch to renewable energy," he said.
Pertamina will gradually switch to clean energy starting from gasification, decarbonization, use of geothermal energy, hydro energy, wind and ocean wave energy, biomass and biogas, waste energy, to diesel.
In the future, Pertamina's vision is to become a battery and electric vehicle company, hydrogen-based energy, a carbon market, and making a green industrial area.
