After Becoming A Spotlight, BMKG Updates Information: Potential Tsunami From Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Down
JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said the potential for a tsunami from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK) has decreased.
"Because the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau has been seen visually weakening today, of course the potential for a tsunami due to the eruption will also decrease, or be very small," said Dwikorita as quoted by Antara, Thursday, April 28.
Dwikorita said that visually only molten lava entered the sea and there was no exposure at all, so the potential for a tsunami decreased.
Then from the results of aerial monitoring from the Merak crossing location, Bakauheni is located quite far from the eruption source, and is blocked by several islands.
"Because the location is far away, and several islands are blocked, we conclude that the crossing is relatively safe from the dangers of a tsunami, especially since the eruption is weak. So the source of the power plant is weak, so we can determine God willing, it is safe for crossings," he said.
Dwikorita said, given the fluctuating eruptions of Mount Anak Krakatau, BMKG together with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) continue to monitor the development of eruptions and the potential for a tsunami.
"And we will immediately update developments if there are dangerous (symptoms)," said Dwikorita.
