Bayern Munich Knocked Out Of Champions League, Nagelsmann: Semi-final Was The Target And We Failed
JAKARTA - Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said his team was in an impartial season after being knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Nagelsmann admitted that he failed because the target for the semifinals was not reached.
Munich was eliminated by Villarreal when the two teams met in the second leg of the 2021/2022 Champions League quarter-finals. In the match Wednesday, April 13 early morning WIB, FC Hollywood conceded a surprising goal in the 88th minute after winning 1-0.
The equalizer score made by Villarreal made Munich fall. The reason, Robert Lewandowski et al lost 1-2 on aggregate.
Blown away in the quarter-finals, Munich automatically stopped. In fact, the semifinals became their target.
This defeat also makes Nagelsmann will spend his first season with Bayern with the possibility of only getting the league title. That's because previously they were also eliminated from the German Cup.
"We're out of the German Cup, out of the Champions League. I don't think this is good enough for Bayern. We considered the semi-finals as our minimal target and we failed to achieve it," Nagelsmann was quoted as saying by Sky Sport.
"It was considered one of my three biggest defeats," he continued.
Munich actually dominated in the second leg, but unfortunately they failed to add to the goal created by Robert Lewandowski in the 52nd minute. Nagelsmann felt their performance was better than the first leg, but the result was the opposite.
"What happened we lost the duel. From our performance today, you saw the emotion and good tactics we used. It's the complete opposite of the first leg," said Nagelsmann.
"We knew they were going to stay. In the end we missed that second goal. The pressure was good. We defended well. We dominated them for almost the whole game, but that's not important because we've been knocked out," he regrets.
