DIY Police Call Parents Of Perpetrators And Victims 'Klitih'

YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta Regional Police will summon the parents of the perpetrators and victims of "klitih" or street crimes on Jalan Gedongkuning Yogyakarta on Sunday (3/4) morning which claimed one life.

"We will call the parents of the victim and the perpetrator for questioning. Do they at least know that the children are out of the house or boarding house at a very late time," said the Director General of the Regional Police of DIY, Kombes Ade Ary Syam Indriadi, as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, April 12.

In addition to parents, the police will summon teachers or school principals for questioning.

According to him, information from parents and teachers will be important information for the police to handle cases of street crimes or "klitih" so that they don't happen again in the future.

He said the street crime was categorized as a brawl because it was carried out by two groups. “It just so happened that one of the groups was more prepared and later became the perpetrator. Meanwhile, groups that are not ready to become victims," he said.

Ade said conditions could be turned 180 degrees so that both groups have the same potential to turn into perpetrators or become victims.

He ensured that the victims of street crimes were not random victims but became part of a group.

Meanwhile, the five perpetrators of street crimes on Jalan Gedongkuning who have been arrested are all no longer categorized as children because they are 18-21 years old. "Some are still in school but there are also alumni from the same school," he said.

Ade hopes that the term "klitih" will be returned to its true meaning because since 2000 it has shifted to a meaning that feels scary. "Klitih" means taking a walk at night to relieve fatigue.

"If it's not the residents of Yogyakarta who return it. Then who else. Everyone has to create a safe atmosphere in Yogyakarta,” he said.
