Turning Off The Lights For 1 Hour During Earth Hour 2022, DKI Provincial Government Claims To Be Successful In Saving Energy To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Environment Agency extinguished the lights in commemoration of Earth Hour 2022 on March 26 for one hour. As a result, the blackout affects three things, starting from saving energy, saving the economy, to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"We carried out this action on Saturday, March 26, 2022. From the results of PLN calculations after the lights were turned off, it turned out that it could affect three things, namely, energy savings, economic savings, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions," said the Head of the Environmental Service. The blackout is intended to increase public awareness to save energy. Asep said, based on the PLN calculation table, it was noted that the results of turning off the lights for 1 (one) hour could save electricity consumption by 171.55 MWh.

In addition, this action also saves the economy by Rp. 247,837,924 and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 160.23 tons of carbon dioxide.

Asep said there were a number of buildings in Jakarta that participated in the blackout. This activity was carried out in accordance with the Instruction of the Governor of DKI Jakarta Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Blackouts in the context of Energy Saving Actions and Reducing Carbon Emissions.

In this regulation, the action of turning off the lights is carried out three times a year, namely during the Environmental Action Warning which is held in March; Earth Day commemoration on April 22; and the commemoration of World Environment Day which falls on 5 June.

"A number of privately owned buildings, such as commercial buildings, shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and apartments, also participated in the blackout," said Asep.

All buildings or offices of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (except hospitals, health centers, clinics, etc.) Protocol Road and Arterial Road. Symbols of the City of Jakarta (City Hall Building, National Monument and its fountain, Statue of Arjuna Wiwaha and its fountain, Hotel Indonesia Roundabout and its fountain, Statue of Youth and its fountain, Statue of Hero, and Statue of General Sudirman). Protocol roads and arterial roads in 5 (five) administrative city areas where the lights have been extinguished are as follows: - Central Jakarta: Sudirman Street (Dukuh Atas to Jalan Gedung Sampurna Strategic), Jalan Thamrin; around Jalan Merdeka except for Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara in front of the Presidential Palace), Jalan Pemuda Gate - Jalan Asia Afrika, City Hall Office Courtyard, Central Jakarta Mayor's Office Complex. - North Jakarta: Jalan Yos Sudarso, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan and North Jakarta Mayor's Office Complex. - West Jakarta: Daan Mogot Street, Kembangan Raya Street and the West Jakarta Mayor's Office Complex.- South Jakarta: Prapanca Raya Street, Rasuna Said Street, Sudirman Street (Sampurna Strategic Building up to the Youth statue), and South Jakarta Mayor Office Complex.- East Jakarta: Jalan Dr. Sumarno, Jalan Raden Inten and the East Jakarta Mayor's Office Complex.
