JAKARTA - The Maritime Security Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (Bakamla RI) managed to secure homemade firearms in Teluk Dalam Ambon when the State Ship (KN) Sea Snake 405 carried out an operation.
"Last week, Bakamla managed to secure a homemade pistol when KN Laut 405 was carrying out an operation," said Head of Bakamla, Vice Admiral (Laksdya) TNI Aan Kurnia during a press conference at the Bakamla Headquarters Hall, Jakarta, Antara, Friday, April 1.
He revealed that the operation began with information from the public about suspicious activities on ex-foreign ships that had anchored and were not well managed.
Responding to these suspicions, the State Ship (KN) Ular Laut 405, which was carrying out Operation Gada Nusantara VIII/2022, on the afternoon of March 23, 2022, dispatched the VBSS Team to carry out inspections of the ships that were anchored.
"After Bakamla dispatched the VBSS team to inspect the ship, it turned out that there was a homemade gun along with two bullets," he said.
The discovery of this weapon is a development of the discovery of 1 ranger firearm made in Austin Texas, 45 mm caliber with 6 bullets in the waters of Manado, North Sulawesi.
He mentioned that these weapons have the ability to kill and are not commonly circulated in Indonesia. Regarding the purpose of the weapons smuggling, Aan Kurnia said that currently it is still in the process of being explored.
Regarding the findings of firearms in Indonesian waters, the Head of the Indonesian Bakamla revealed that his party was actively coordinating and sharing information with the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police in carrying out developments.
"Bakamla is investigating to find out the mode of smuggling of firearms by sea using fishing boats and wooden cargo ships," he said.
He asked all officers to be more vigilant and careful in carrying out inspections of ships. "Please pray that we can find the roots," said Aan Kurnia.
