6.9 Magnitude Earthquake In South Nias, Shocks Felt In West Sumatra Area

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 occurred in South Nias, North Sumatra (Sumut). The shocks of the South Nias earthquake were reported to be felt in a number of areas in West Sumatra (West Sumatra).

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the 6.9-magnitude South Nias earthquake occurred at 04.09 western Indonesia time, Monday, March 14.

The South Nias earthquake was located at the coordinator 0.71 latitude-98.50 east longitude (161 km southeast of South Nias, North Sumatra). The earthquake that was felt in the West Sumatra region was 25 km deep.

The BMKG confirmed that the South Nias earthquake, which shook in a number of areas in West Sumatra, did not have the potential for a tsunami.

Meanwhile, a number of residents reported strong shaking from the earthquake. As quoted from the infosumbar Instagram account, residents through the comments column said the earthquake was felt in Padang, Payakumbuh to Bukittinggi.
