Urges Government To Open Russian-Ukrainian Dialogue, DPR GKSB Worried About A Nuclear Explosion

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Bilateral Cooperation Group (GKSB) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI)-Parliament of Ukraine, Sugeng Suparwoto, said that Russia's invasion of Ukraine could have a broad impact on world peace. He worries that Russia's and Ukraine's nukes could harm the world.

"How do we know the potential for nuclear weapons and so on to be involved in this war is very large. We know how Russia has nuclear weapons, in Uraina there are also many nuclear plants and this is very dangerous for the world," said Sugeng at the Senayan Parliament Complex in Jakarta, quoted from the DPR RI's YouTube channel, Monday, March 7.

Although Russian President Vladimir Putin admits that Russia's invasion of Ukraine will not target public facilities, reality says otherwise. Sugeng said that the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine did not only attack military facilities but also public facilities.

Therefore, Sugeng encouraged the Government of Indonesia as a non-aligned country to get involved more deeply to create peace between Russia and Ukraine. This can be realized by actively engaging representatives of Russia and Ukraine for dialogue.

In the near future, Sugeng will request that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi be a mediator between Russia-Ukraine which is experiencing conflict in order to achieve peace between the two countries.

"Once again, later in the parliament, we will ask the President of the Republic of Indonesia for the order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to immediately facilitate a forum between interested parties and stakeholders in it to have a kind of dialogue forum as soon as possible," he said.

Sugeng emphasized that the DPR will soon initiate a meeting with the ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine to Indonesia to discuss the war, the escalation of the conflict has not decreased until now.

"And what we are doing in Commission VII and also I as Chair of the GKSB will also invite the Russian ambassador in Indonesia in the shortest possible time," he added.

The meeting to find a common understanding of the use of military force for any purpose is not justified. Sugeng said that the conflicts that occurred could be resolved by means of dialogue without war, which has a high potential for casualties.

"In today's modern era, everything can be resolved through dialogue," he said.

In Russia until Sunday, March 6 local time, a wave of protests against the entry of the Russian military into Ukraine occurred in many cities in Russia. The masses rejected war as the main way to resolve the conflict between the two sides.

Citing Reuters, the local Ministry of Home Affairs revealed, as many as 5.200 people took part in the protest movement. The protest monitoring group OVD-Info said about 4.366 people involved in protests against the Russian invasion in 56 different cities in Russia were detained by local authorities.
